The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
